If you ask most musicians, the best argument for a band having a drummer is so that the bassist can feel superior to someone.
Drummers are the Rodney Dangerfields of the band world. They get no respect. Even Jason Aldean's wild-man drummer, Rich Redmond, gets in on the act:
"How do you know when the stage is level? The drummer drools out of both sides of his mouth."
Funny thing is that a lot of drummers are more like Redmond. He's got an undergraduate degree in music from Texas Tech in Lubbock, and a master's in the same from the University of North Texas. He can read -- and play -- rock, blues, jazz, symphonic, opera, classical, reggae, fusion and just about any other kind of music with a beat.
